Answer is medial pterygoid
ReplyDeleteThe inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) involves intraoral needle insertion along the pterygomandibular raphe to target the mandibular foramen. The needle penetrates the mucosa and pierces the buccinator muscle (lateral boundary of the pterygomandibular space) before entering the space and approaching the nerve. This is confirmed in standard dental anatomy and technique descriptions, such as those in StatPearls and anesthesia reviews, where the path explicitly traverses the buccinator without routinely piercing the other options: medial pterygoid (medial boundary, only if deviated), temporalis (anterior/superior, not in path), or superior constrictor (posterior/medial raphe contributor, but insertion is lateral).
